Case History
Overview
The authors refer to two case reports of extraabdominal desmoid in the neck area at the Otolaryngological Clinic of Faculty Hospital and Policlinic in Ostrava.
Desmoids occur rarely. Incidence of the disease is 2 to 4/2 million inhabitants. Only 7.9% of desmoids occur in the area of head and neck (1.5 to 3 cases of the disease in the otolaryngological area/10 million/year). In spite of the histopathologically benign disease, behavior of desmoids in the clinic is aggressive. They infiltrate as they grow and tend to relapse very often.
The authors describe two cases of extraabdominal desmoid. In both cases the residual tumors resulted in relapse of the disease. In the first case the subsequent reoperation after more precise histological diagnosis proved to be was successful and the female patient has been already six years without signs of the disease. In the other case the following reoperations in the region of thorax mediastinum were not successful.
Emphasis is laid upon surgical treatment. The authors recommend, whenever possible, a total radical extirpation of the tumor. Any residual tumor results in a relapse of the disease.
Other therapeutic modalities (radiotherapy, chemotherapy) may in some cases improve control of the disease.
Key words:
