Mental load in nurses taking care for oncological patients

Overview
Nurses’ work at the oncological department is considered very demanding from the psychological perspective. The aim of our research was to find out perception of mental load in general nurses working at the standard oncological department, to identify situations oncological nurses consider the most stressful and to find out possible differences in perception of mental load in nurses in relation to age, length of practice and degree of burn-out syndrome. The Meister questionnaire was used to assess the mental load, the BDG Pines questionnaire to measure the burn-out syndrome. 168 general nurses from 5 oncological departments participated in research. It was found that general oncological nurses did not perceive the high degree of mental load during their occupation but they perceive very negatively the time pressure and decrease of their efficiency. The increased perception of depression, fatigue and responsibility were also reported. The direct linear dependence was found between the perception of mental load and degree of burn-out syndrome in nurses. The excessive administration was the most frequently reported source of stress in nurses.
