Breast cancer screening – control and revision of rightfulness of compensation at contractual workplaces of General Health Insurance Company of the Czech Republic in the Moravian-Silesian Region

Overview

The paper summarizes the results of control of the screening mammography examination in the Moravian-Silesian region. It documents shortcomings in execution and reporting the health care in this important area of prevention. The main shortcomings included lack of compliance with recommended standards for provision of breast cancer screening and performing diagnostic mammography and associated induced further mammographic examinations with occasional freak substantiation. These practices endanger the patients by unjustifiable load of frequent examinations and associated potential iatrogenic pathogenesis – induction of unsubstantiated concerns or even cancerophobia. The inspection s resulted in reduction of cost of health care. Moreover, the medical institutions were reminded to the need of adherence to valid regulations. Furthermore, arguments were reached for importance of qualified information of the women in the age period at risk to be aware of their rights of specific care as well as to prevent possible fears.
