Predictors of Language and Speech Development in Boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Overview
The aim of this review is to provide a brief summary of the current knowledge regarding the predictors of language and speech development in boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is the most prevalent rare genetic neuromuscular disease of childhood, affecting mainly boys. It is characterised by progressive muscle weakness with an unfavourable prognosis. In addition to motor difficulties, neurodevelopmental difficulties, particularly in language and speech development are common in these boys and may precede motor symptoms. This review highlights the importance of regarding non-motor developmental milestones as indicators of possible neurodevelopmental deficits. At the same time, it provides clinical speech and language therapists with information about language and speech development in boys with DMD, predictors for identifying these deficits and the possibility of early initiation of speech therapy. The role of the clinical speech and language therapist in the multidisciplinary team in the care of boys with DMD is a key, but often overlooked, part of their overall development. Early clinical speech therapy intervention can significantly improve the quality of life for children with DMD and their caregivers.
