Overview
Active cell death (apoptosis) represents a genetically predetermined way of cell decay. It is therefore a counterpart to tissue proliferative activity. The integrity of a multicellular organism is determined by dynamic balance between the production of new cells and the decay of other cells. This allows to maintain an optimal number of cells in tissues with a different proliferative activity throughout ontogenesis and in postnatal life. Cell death thus becomes a normal and essential part of morphogenesis. The significance of apoptosis in some cardiovascular diseases is described: hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathy and heart graft rejection.
