Overview
The aim of this article is to provide a clear summary of the main principles of the new European recommendations on ECG evaluation of athletes, focusing on risk stratification. It highlights the distinction between physiological variation of the ECG curve in athletes and on other findings that require further examination to exclude any possible cardiovascular disease, which may cause sudden death in athletes. In case of doubt about the “normality” of ECG findings in athletes, it is absolutely necessary to carry out further cardiologic or physical training tests to be able to detect a possible structural heart problem and to prevent any further burden from sport. ECG remains one of the fundamental non-invasive examination techniques not only in sports medicine, but also in general practice.
