A brief review of radiotherapy of rectal cancer

Overview
Radiotherapy is an effective method in the treatment of rectal cancer. Preoperative radiotherapy decreases the risk of local recurrence and prolongs overall survival by about 10 %. There is no evidence that postoperative radiotherapy prolongs survival. Whether radiochemotherapy is more efficient than radiotherapy alone is not clear, since the results of small randomised trials are partly conflicting. Palliative radiotherapy of inoperable rectal cancer offers significant clinical benefit.
