Overview

The authors present a survey of the problem concerning nocardiosis and describe the case of anatypical course of the disease in a 55 years old woman who has not suffered from any signs ofimmunodeficiency. The infection came about due to skin injury on the arm caused by a rustynail at work in the garden. After the development of an ulcer in the place of injury the infectiondisseminated into peritoneal cavity, lungs and skin with the formation of abscesses in the liver, right kidney, the Douglas space and in the thigh muscles. The patient was successfully treatedby surgery and 73 days lasting antibiotic therapy. The therapy gradually employed severalcombinations of antibiotics; the authors discuss clinical relevance of the examination ofsensitivity of nocardia to kotrimazol, considered by most authors as the remedy of first choice.

Key words:
nocardiosis - infection - treatment.
