Overview

Hyponatremia is characterized by a decrease of serum sodium level below 135 mmol/l. Severehyponatremia (serum levels below 127 mmol/l) developed within 48 hours or below 120 mmol/developing during a longer period of time) is associated with a high risk life-threatening osmoticdemyelinization syndrome. The same risk originates in an ill-judged correction of theseextremely low pathological levels.
