Overview

The authors investigated changes of sernm osteocalcin levels is patients with differentiated thyroid Carcinoma after total thyroidectomy and treatment with radioiodinelsl.Osteocalcin as a marker of bone reconstruction was in the investigated group of patients higher as compared with a control group, on the borderline of statistical significance. The use of a marker of bone remodelling to prove metastatic affection is however not sufficient evidence. Also the influence of suppressive treatment with thyroid hormones on values of serum osteocalcin which would signalize in tase of an increased metabolic turnover of bony tissue the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis in the investigated patients was not sufficiently significant.
