Overview
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in uraemic patients treated by dialysis. Apart from coronary heart disease the main factors of mortality are heart failure and sudden death. One of the causes is a higher occurrence of morphologic abnormalities, such as heart hypertrophy, valvular disorders and pericardial disease. These morphological abnormalities are the result of some common risk factors observed in the general population and some specific situations typical for renal disease. Progression and development of cardiac disorders can be retarded or entirely stopped by systematic prevention of these risk factors.
Key words:
renal insufficiency - uraemic cardiomyopathy - left ventricular hypertrophy -cardiac fibrosis - valvular defects.
