Overview

Chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) represents 15-20 % of all leukaemias. CML is a malig-nant disorder of haematopoietic stem cells characterized by the presence of the Ph chromosome. The confirmation of this chromosome is of a crucial importance for establishing of the finaldiagnosis. The actual incidence of CML in the Czech Republic was not published. The authorscompared retrospectively cases of newly diagnosed CML in the northern Moravian region in1990-1996 registered at the Regional Office of the National Oncological Registry in Ostravaand compared them to cases with confirmed Ph chromosome at Haemato-oncological Depar-tment, University Hospital Olomouc (the only cytogenetic laboratory in the region) from thesame area and for the same period. Only 52 cases (age 19-83, median 47.5) of CML werecytogenetically verified. At the same time there were 190 new CML entries in the regionaloncological registry (age 11-91, median 63). The authors conclude that the diagnosis of CMLwas cytogenetically verified in one quarter of cases only and they discuss the possible reasonsand consequences of this finding. The average annual incidence of CML in the northernMoravian region according to the National Oncological Registry is 1.38 new cases per 100 000inhabitants with a male to female ratio of 1.4:1.
