Causes of Erectile Dysfunction from the Aspect of the Urologist

Overview

The authors present a group of 123 patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) examined in theandrological out-patients department which is part of a urological department, and analysecauses leading to ED. The patients age was within the range from 19.2 to 76.4 years, average44.4 ± 9.9 years. The duration of ED before the first examination in the andrological out-patientdepartment was 3.7 ± 3.3 years. Primary ED was recorded in 5 patients (4.1 % - 1x dysgenesisof the cavernous bodies, 4x bachelor syndrome). In 23 psychogenic ED (18.7 %) was probable,in 100 patients organic (81.3 %). In psychogenic ED neurasthenia was present in 8 patients(34.8 %). Four patients had problems in conjunction with starting sex life (17.4 %), unsuitablebehaviour of the partner was the reason in 2 (8.7 %), in one each the authors recorded theso-called widower’s syndrome, maniodepressive psychosis, habituation to the partner, in sixpatients (26.1 %) the cause was not detected. In patients with organic ED the followingdiagnoses were recorded: diabetes mellitus 50 patients (the absolute figures are also percent-ages) - 26 type I, 24 type II, smoking 35, hypertension 29, hyperlipidaemia 26, obesity 23, IHD14, ischaemia of the extremities 10, alcoholism 6, pelvic fracture 4, renal failure 4, traumaticspinal lesion 3, condition after CMP 3, surgery on account of rectal cancer, 3, surgery of BHP3. Peyronie’s disease 3, fracture of the penis 2, laminectomy 2, combined treatment of prostatecancer 2, one each injury, chronic injury of the perineum (cyclist), priapism, chemotherapy,bilateral aortofemoral bypass, surgery of an abdominal aortal aneurysm, dysgenesis of thecavernous bodies.
