Overview
The prevalence of obesity is increasing. Bariatric and metabolic surgery is one of the most effective treatment options for obesity and its comorbidities. Mental disorders are associated with severe obesity. Psychological assessment is part of the standard examination prior to bariatric surgery. Several changes accompany weight loss after bariatric surgery, such as normalization of psychosocial functioning and improvement of mental disorders; however, these changes are negative in some cases.
Key words:
obesity – surgical treatment of obesity – psychopathology associated with obesity – psychological assessment before bariatric surgery
