Overview
Major statement:
This review article summarizes recent scientific knowledges about dysfunctions of lower urinary tract in diabetic patients. The article includes pathophysiological processes, clinical and urodynamic findings and treatment of patients with these diagnoses.
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease whose incidence is increasing worldwide, and that is associated with high morbidity and mortality. A lot of complications appear due to this disease, especially diabetic nefropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy. Among the complications associated with this disease include dysfunction of lower urinary tract , which are presented in 80% of diabetic patients. Clinical manifestations are diverse – from hyperactive urinary bladder to acontractile detrusor. This review article summarizes recent scientific knowledges about dysfunctions of lower urinary tract in diabetic patients. The article includes pathophysiological processes, clinical and urodynamic findings and also treatment of patients with these diagnoses.
Key words:
Cystopathy, diabetes, neurogenic bladder, urinary incontinence.
