Overview
Microcytic anemia caused by iron deficiency (ID) is the most common type of anemia in children in developing and also in developed countries. Highest incidence of ID is described in two groups of children – infants and adolescent girls. A case of infant suffering from severe iron deficiency anemia combined with deficiency of vitamin B12 is discussed. The lack of sufficient nutrition except the breast milk was the cause of this condition.
Current knowledge of etiology, diagnostics and treatment of iron deficiency anemia is summarized. The importance of breast feeding, well-timed inclusion of complementary foods has been highlighted.
