Overview
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)is an autoimmune disease. After sideropenic anaemia it is thesecond most frequent haematological disease in childhood. Its course is as a rule benign. Some patients requiretreatment due to the clinical signs of haemorrhage or markedly low thrombocyte values where the patient is athigh risk of severe haemorrhage. In the submitted paper the authors compare the therapeutic results with methylprednisolone (MP)administe-red by the i.v.route in 26 patients hospitalized with acute ITP during a five-year period at the Second PaediatricDepartment,School of Medicine,Comenius University and Children ’s Hospital. The patients were divided intotwo groups.Patients in the first group were given MP -10 mg/kg/day i.v.for three consecutive days, patients of thesecond group MP -30 mg/kg/day i.v.also for three days. The objective of the work was to find out whether there are differences between the two groups as regards therising trend of Tr,the need to proceed with treatment after the basic 3-day treatment and development of thechronic form of ITP.The authors did not observe statistically significant differences in the therapeutic results between the two groupsof patients treated with different doses of methylprednisolone.
