Dermoscopy – Physics in the Hands of a Dermatologist

Overview

Dermoscopy is a routine, non-invasive examination method, which crucially increases the diagnostic accuracy of the dermatologic examination. However, its physical principle is frequently omitted in dermatology literature. The article briefly summarizes the history of dermoscopy, the structure of the dermoscope and deals with the fundamental principles of the classical optics for the comprehension of the principle of the dermoscopy. Based on this knowledge, the route of the ray of light from the source through the cutaneous structures to the human eye is described. The role of polarization, birefringence and Tyndall effect are discussed.
