Overview
Psoriasis is a common, chronic, inflammatory erythematosquamous disease of the skin with imposing economic costs, time consumption and potentially severe impact on quality of patient life. The aim of a prospective, cross-sectional survey was to characterize basic demographic and clinical data on patients in dermatology out-patient clinics throughout Slovakia, pattern of psoriasis health care delivery and overall satisfaction. Data were collected by 76 dermatologists (36% of the total number) who reported on every patient examined or treated for psoriasis during the two weeks period in February and March 2008. There were 1629 cases reported at average age of 47 years and median of 17% body surface area affected. Distribution of clinical forms was as follows: 70% plaque, 13% arthropatic, 13% pustular and 4% inverse type psoriasis. Almost all patients received topical treatment, 34% had systemic treatment and 34% had phototherapy. A quarter of patients in the highest quartile of body surface area affected used neither systemic therapy nor phototherapy. The extent of disease correlated with systemic treatment or phototherapy use. Patient and physician global assessment correlated in a significant way with the extent of skin involvement.
Key words:
psoriasis – corticosteroids – calcipotriol – acitretin – ciclosporin – methotrexate – phototherapy – biologics
