The Use of Coercive Measures and Remedies in Psychiatry – an International ProjectEUNOMIA

Overview

This article gives information about international project EUNOMIA, in which Psychiatric ClinicPrague in cooperation with Psychiatric Hospital Bohnice also take part. The EUNOMIA project– European Evaluation of Coercion in Psychiatry and Harmonisation of Best Clinical Practice – issupported by 5th Resource Programme of European Union grant projects. This project concernsthe use of coercive measures in psychiatry. In the term „coercive measures“ we include involuntaryadmission, involuntary treatment, restraint and seclusion in psychiatric praxis.The aim of the project is to describe national praxis in 12 European countries, to provide internationalcomparison and to settle European guidline of best practice.Data will be gathered using questionnaires given in three time points to 320 involuntary admittedpatients and to 75 voluntary admitted patients who feel somehow coerced.Then so called „focus groups“ – working groups of people who have experience with coercivemeasures (psychiatrist, patients, carers, lawyers, social workers, police, ethical and other experts)will be formed.Required data will be disseminated and used in further psychiatric practice.
