New knowledge about depression is summarized. Its importance of treatment of depression isdemonstrated on the monoamine hypothesis of depression. We still use the monoamine hypothesisas a basis of development of new antidepressants. During the few last years new more specificantidepressants and dual acting antidepressants became available. These new antidepressantshave advantages in comparison with classical tricyclic preparations and the most frequentlyprescribed SSRIs.
