A Comparison of Epidemiological Data on Acute Stroke in the Zlin District and the CR Analysed Using the UZIS and IKTA Methodology

Overview
Introduction:
Stroke is a very common cause of death and the leading cause of disability in adulthood. Therefore, national information on the incidence and other epidemiological information on stroke are important. In the Czech Republic, long‑term basic statistics on stroke are obtained from the data collected in the National Registry of Hospitalized Patients (NRHOSP) held by the Czech Institute of Health Information and Statistics (UZIS). The aim of this study is to compare statistical epidemiological data in both registries, especially the data on incidence of acute stroke not only in the Zlin district but also in the Czech Republic as a whole.
Methodology:
Patients with diagnosis codes I60, I61, I63 and G45, who lived in the Zlin district and were in entered in the NRHOSP, were included in the analysis of the UZIS data on the incidence and types of stroke. For the IKTA Registry, data for the same period (year 2011) were processed and evaluated for all hospitalized patients or outpatients with acute stroke living in the Zlin district and treated at the Bata Regional Hospital in Zlin, a stroke centre that has the Zlin district as its primary catchment area. These data were compared with the same countrywide epidemiological data from NRHOSP for the same period.
Results:
According to the IKTA Registry, the incidence of stroke in the Zlin district in 2011 was 314 per 100,000 inhabitants; ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke accounted for 88.0% and 12%, respectively. According to the UZIS statistics, the incidence of acute stroke in the population of the Zlin district was 344.6 per 100,000, whereas ischemic stroke constituted 88.9% and hemorrhagic stroke 11.1%. The nationwide incidence according to NRHOSP for 2011 was 290.78; ischemic stroke occurred in 87.3%.
Conclusion:
In this comparative study, similar data on the incidence of acute stroke were found in both registries (in the Zlin district as well as nationwide). The incidence of acute stroke is lower than previously suggested in the published data, and so is the incidence of hemorrhagic stroke. The IKTA Registry is accurate and provides more detailed information.
