Outpatient care of infants with severe lung disease arising in the perinatal period

Overview

Currently, there is a lack of studies addressing the post-discharge care of children with chronic lung disease of immaturity. The unique European Respiratory Society clinical guidelines of 2020 represents the first large-scale work on this topic and makes several suggestions. However, they are based on a low or very low quality of the available scientific papers. Based on our experience, we provide basic information on how to follow up children with chronic respiratory problems after discharge. We list the most common causes of acute and chronic respiratory symptoms in children born prematurely, treatment options and prevention of progression of respiratory difficulties. Long-term follow-up of these children in specialist outpatient clinics is recommended.
