Overview
Gastro‑oesophageal reflux disease is caused by the return of stomach contents back into the oesophagus. This condition is called gastro‑oesophageal reflux. The most frequent consequence of gastro‑oesophageal reflux is an inflammation of the oesophagus (reflux oesophagitis). The inflammation may be visible during endoscopy as variously extensive erosions or may be established only by microscopy from biopsy (microscopic oesophagitis). Gastro‑oesophageal disease can even be manifested in organs outside the oesophagus as extraoesophageal reflux disease, which often affects mainly the pulmonary system.
