Dressing Solutions for Better Wound Care

19. 3. 2023

Although wounds at different stages of healing require different types of treatment, the essential part of any dressing change is cleaning the wound and its surroundings from tissue debris and microorganisms and protecting it from reinfection. Modern dressing solutions facilitate easy cleaning and moisturizing of wounds. Effective treatment also brings clinical and economic benefits.

Introduction

When changing dressings, it is necessary not only to change the primary and secondary dressings, but also to care for the wound and its surroundings. Oils (magistraliter or oil-based HVLP) are commonly used to remove adhering layers of creams and pastes (hydrophobic layers) in these areas. The actual cleaning of the wound should be as gentle and painless as possible. Properly cleaned wounds contribute to increased healing efficacy. Effective treatment also brings clinical and economic benefits.

The Importance of Wound Care Solutions

Dressing solutions gently rinse and mechanically clean wounds. They are suitable for daily wound hygiene and treatment of wound infection. Thorough removal of dirt, scabs, crusts, and biofilm from the wound is crucial for faster healing, while moistening the wound allows for easier, faster, and less painful dressing changes and improves the quality of life for patients with chronic wounds.

Currently, the market offers solutions containing antiseptic and surfactant agents, either alone or in combination. These solutions can be combined with other modern wound dressing methods.

Wide Range of Clinical Use

The HydroClean® Solution, containing a unique combination of the surfactant poloxamer and the antiseptic polyhexanide (PHMB), provides effective protection against multi-resistant and fungal pathogens (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus /MRSA/, Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci /VRE/, Candida albicans) and prevents reinfection. Poloxamer facilitates the penetration of the antiseptic into the wound bed.

The dermatologically safe HydroClean® Solution is suitable for long-term use in the treatment of acute, chronic (pressure ulcers, venous and diabetic ulcers), or infected wounds and for palliative care of oncological wounds. The antimicrobial properties of the solution prevent biofilm formation on dressing and cover materials. Thanks to its properties, it is well tolerated by allergic and diabetic patients.

This solution, with a wide range of uses, is suitable for daily care of urinary catheters and the skin around stomas, fistulas, and abscesses. It can be used for first and second-degree burns, chemical burns, or injuries caused by electric current or ionizing radiation.

Conclusion

The therapy of non-healing wounds is lengthy and complicated, and further complications may arise during this process. Preventive measures to prevent reinfection and keep the wound clean using dressing solutions significantly contribute to improving the quality of life and satisfaction of patients. Last but not least, they allow for faster and more economically advantageous wound treatment.
