Overview
Production of Blood Transfusion Service in the year 2002 follows trends of previous years. In spite ofdiscussions on the organization and principal change in the control of good manufacture practice(majority of blood banks had to pass a control of StateDrug Control Institute according to newmedicinelaw) organization and structure of blood transfusion service remains the same. Great majority ofcollections is performed in not very large centres and processed locally, only 8 % of collections are sentfor processing to other centres. Exceptionally large processing centres overtake service of smallerpreviously independent blood banks. Donor population is stable but lower then recommended (36.4donors per 1000 inhab.). Great majority of donations is performed at no cost (98.1% of whole bloodcollections). Number of collection is slightly increasing (43 donations per 1000 inhab.). Number ofplasmaphereses is increasing (59.0 thds. collections) but has not reached values of the mid nineties.Platelet availability increases (to 23.6 thds therapeutical doses), number of aphereses is increasing(platelets, multicomponent and/or erythrocytes). The production shifts to products with lower leukocytecontamination, „Red cells buffy-coat depleted in additive solution“ are the most common product(91.7 %). “Red cells leukodepleted” represents 7.6 % of production. The proportion of plasma used inclinics is very high (17 units per 1000 inhab.), the amount of plasma sent for processing is increasing(80.8 thds. litres). The number of donor positive in infectious diseases markers is decreasing, butprevalence of HIV+ remains very low.
