Electromyography Activity of Lower Leg Muscles during Walking on High Heels

Overview

In the present study we describe and analyze the course of electromyography activity (EMG) of lower leg muscles during walking barefoot, on the low and high heels. Twenty-three young healthy females participated in our study. The EMG of lower leg muscles: medial gastrocnemius, soleus muscle and tibialis anterior, were monitored by surface electromyography during natural women walk. At the same time, the acceleration and angular velocity of movement of the tibia was recorded by inertial measuring device (accelerometer and gyroscope). The results showed, that the increase of heel height activated and the prolonged tonic activity of lower leg muscles (triceps surae). Furthermore, significantly was changed the course of electromyography activity in muscles monitored.
