Overview

The care for patients after operations on the thyroid gland with subsequent paralysis of the vocal cords belongs to the competency of physicians of multiple disciplines. The primary surgical part of the therapy is frequently succeeded by not only further surgical care but also principally by a long-term phoniatric care. In cases of postoperative temporary or permanent vocal cord paralysis, the given institution should have at its disposal a specific plan of the therapeutic procedure. Even correct operation procedures with possible revision of the recurrent nerve will not always guarantee mobility of the vocal organs. It is then a question of time how we can manage the ensuing situation to the patient’s benefit. We view the given area of problems through the eyes of interested specialists. We are focused on the postoperative phoniatric care with the aim to work out a therapeutic plan for vocal re-education in conditions of temporary paralyses of the vocal apparatus.
