Overview

Malignant lymphomas represent approximately 5% of all malignant neoplasms of the head and neck area (Head and Neck, H&N). This heterogeneous group of tumours is classically divided into two subgroups Hodgkin lymphomas (HL) and non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL). A correct biopsy diagnosis includes also the standardization of the lymphoma diagnosis and reporting leading to a correct typing, grading and staging of ML as well as to the identification of clinically relevant prognostic and predictive parameters of the tumour cells and of possible therapeutic targets. The majority of NHL H&N are of B-cell origin, the most common type of them is the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). DLBCL is an aggressive B-lymphoproliferative neoplasm, which represents morphologically and biologically heterogeneous groups of tumors. Identification of individual parameters of heterogeneity DLBCL is important not only for the diagnostic recognition of its different subtypes, but also for definition of its prognostic and predictive parameters, which might play a role for indication of a correct adequate therapy of patients with DLBCL.
