General Nurse and Tracheostomy

Overview
The designation or suffix term “stomy” occurs in virtually every professional metical dictionaries and in basic nursing literature it is listed as an artificial orifice of a hollow organ onto body surface. In spite of the relatively large number of tracheostomy performed the term “stomy” in literature is most often used for colostomy and the suffix term “stomic” nurse is virtually limited to medical personnel providing a complex nursing care of patients with colostomy. Nevertheless, the patients with tracheostomy require no less intensive attention and care of the patient, collaboration with the physician in selecting the tracheostomy cannulas, care of the surgical dressing material and tools for these patients, education of the patient and his or her family before and after the actual surgical intervention, participation in the subsequent dispensation care etc. In spite of the fact that the term “stomic” nurse has not been used in
ORL practice it is obvious that general nurses taking care of the patients with tracheostomy belong to a similar “professional group” as “stomic” nurses. Based on the present information the authors suggest that at larger bed ORL wards or clinics might be specified medical personnel which would be specialized in a complex nursing care of patients with trachemostomy.
