Overview
The authors evaluate a questionnaire survey the objective of which was to assess theviews of Czech ENT specialists on treatment of secretory otitis. Based on the processing of 17 completed questionnaires the authors reached the view that the majority of ENT departments inthe Czech Republic use a similar therapeutic procedure. Primarily, surgery is usually recommendedinvolving adenotomy, paracentesis with suction and possibly insertion of a ventilation tube. Onlythe minority select adenotomy first and the operation of the middle ear is reserved for cases wherethe exudate persists. Conservative medicamentous treatment or air douches are used as a supple-ment of surgical treatment. There are controversies only in some partial problems such as e.g.indication for insertion of a grommet in children with repeated relapses of acute otitis media, orviews on the treatment of secretory otitis in case of minimal hearing losses. The authors comparetheir results with a similar investigation implemented in Great Britain.
