Overview

Somatization is a mechanism indicating expression of unprocessed emotional experiences through physical symptoms without finding the appropriate organic illness and is the basis for a group of mental disorders called in ICD-10 somatoform disorders. Physical symptoms are bothersome to the patient and are not under his volitional and conscious control. The presented paper gives an overview of current views on the etiology of somatization, as well as a summary of current knowledge of somatoform disorders and their comorbidities and therapy.
