Overview
The aim of this article was to present the thematic content of the defended and published dissertations at the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague, which were an integral part of the study of medicine in the whole of Austria-Hungary from the beginning of the 17th century until 1848.
Above all, these Prague medical dissertations represent, an extremely valuable part of the national cultural treasure and are, from the point of view of the history of our medicine, objective evidence of how during the 17th to the mid-19th century medicine gradually shed its scholastic conception, based mainly on the teachings and philosophy of Aristotle, Plato, Celsus, Hippocrates and other great men of antiquity, and under the influence of the rapidly increasing number of scientific breakthroughs it was transformed into a modern form.
