Foundation of the Czechoslovak Medical Society in Bratislava in 1920 – Contributionof Czech Medical Doctors to the Common Prospect and Mutual Collaboration of the Czech and Slovak Medicine

Overview

Foundation of the Society of the Slovak Medical Doctors (SSMD) in Bratislava in June 13, 1920 (till 1938 SocietyCzechoslovak Medical Doctors) belongs to the most important milestones in the modern history of the Slovakmedicine and it can be directly related to the foundation of Comenius University and its first faculty – Faculty ofMedicine. SSMD started in October 1921 publishing the Bratislava Medical Journal, which represented the firstscientific medical journal in Slovakia after the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic. Eighty years of existenceof SSMD, which belongs with its almost 2500 members to the largest professional society within the Slovak MedicalSociety, testifies its contribution to the development and growth of the Slovak medicine. The Society had been formany years the only professional forum where the Slovak medical doctors could meet and where the scientists ofthe Medical Faculty in Bratislava professionally matured. It represents also an important evidence of the materialand spiritual assistance and collaboration of the Czech and Slovak medical doctors during the First CzechoslovakRepublic.
