Overview
Diabetes mellitus affects up to 30 % of the population over the age of 65. Diabetes is associated with acute and chronic complications in the somatic, psychological and social spheres. In recent decades, diabetes has also been associated with geriatric syndromes, both as a key element in the development of geriatric syndromes and as a consequence of geriatric syndromes. Research investigations conducted between 2009 and 2019 have linked diabetes mellitus to an increased prevalence of the geriatric syndromes depression, incontinence, malnutrition, disability and cognitive changes, polypharmacy, frailty syndrome and sarcopenia. The literature review summarizes the findings of the studies conducted and peer-reviewed review articles from the period.
