Overview
Sleep is an essential neccesity of the body. Besides apropriate physical activity and healthy diet, it significantly affects the health of every individual. Sleep disorders are among the most common mental illnesses across age groups, with up to 50 % of the population suffering from them over the age of 65. Diagnosis and management of insomnia requires a comprehensive approach, using knowledge from the fields of psychiatry, neurology, otorhinolaryngology and pneumology. During treatment, it is necessary to be aware of the side effects of drugs, especially in elderly, the risk of addiction and the risk of falls. The aim of the article is to summarize the basic knowledge regarding insomnia in old age and to supplement it with my own experience of working in a long-term care and psychiatric department, including case reports.
