Overview

The authors examine common oral cavity changes in the elderly, complex effects of parodontitis as chronic inflammatory activity accelerating cognitive deterioration, supporting endothelial dysfunction and hypercoagulation. Incomplete dentition causes changes in food composition followed by malnutrition. Attention is paid to oropharyngeal flora as a possible source of repeated respiratory infections in elderly with increasing dependency. An overview of preventive measures in different age groups is given as a conclusion.
