Overview
Gerontological advanced nurse practitioners are certified advanced practice nurses who provide care to elderly-senior patients above 65 years of age. They work in different types of institutionalized and community health care settings. A prerequisite for their practice is a masters or doctorate level of education. They are health care providers who are trained to treat and prevent acute and chronic health problems of an aging population. The aim of the paper is to define a gerontological advanced nurse practitioner in general and in the context of primary care. We also wish to present his/her competences and education required for practice..
