Overview

The authors present information on the number of poisonings in the elderly in the Czech Republic in the years 2005-2009. The article results from data reported by the Czech Toxicological Information Centre in Prague. It deals with the most important factors that affect the course and the prognosis of acute poisonings in old age. It outlines how extrinsic factors affect acute poisoning, and also how internal physiological changes in the elderly may increase the likelyhood of acute poisoning (particularly by drugs). It draws attention to the frequent overlooking of ongoing acute poisoning in the elderly and it speculates on preventive precautions, which could decrease the risks of such poisons on seniors.

Key words:
acute intoxication; senior age; Czech Toxicological Information Centre.
