Overview
The aim of this article is to provide information about the distal injury to the extensor tendon or distal phalanx called the „mallet finger“. This injury is often misdiagnosed or treated insufficiently producing poor functional results. Consistent and early conservative treatment leads to good results in the majority of injured patients. Surgical treatment is indicated for avulsions of the greater distal phalanx base fragments or for purely tendon injuries in young active patients. Despite a wide spectrum of the surgical methods available, there is a considerable rate of complications with surgical and also conservative treatment methods. The treatment of these seemingly trivial injuries should therefore be concentrated in specialized hand surgery departments.
Key words:
mallet finger, disruption of the extensor tendon, distal phalanx fracture, surgical treatment, conservative treatment, complications.
