Overview
Background:
Intraperitoneal onlay mesh is a new method of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair shortening surgical time and reducing its cost, which is very safe and less burdening the patient. Methods: 325 males and 37 females mean age 47.3 years were operated for symptomatic inguinal hernia by the IPOM method. In all cases we used a polyester mesh impregnated with silicone (28).Results: The mean surgical time was 18 minutes for a unilateral procedure and 28 minutes for a biltareral one. The were no serious complications during operation nor after surgery and no relapse following this type of operation. Conclusion: IPOM hernioplasty can be the method of choice in inguinal hernia repair because the procedure is very simple, cheap and safe for the patient. We have to wait for long-term results to validate the hitherto assembled ones, although they are very promising.
