Overview

Malassezia yeasts have the capability to modulate the immune response directed against them in opposite ways. They are capable to evade the recognition by, or suppress the response of, the immune system and live on the skin surface as commensals. On the other hand, they may elicit an inflammatory response leading to tissue injury and to the development or maintenance of inflammatory skin lesions. Approximately half of the patients with atopic dermatitis have demonstrable hypersensitivity to various allergens of Malassezia yeasts and these data strongly support the assumption that lipophilic yeasts may contribute to the exacerbations of atopic dermatitis lesions.

Key words:
lipophilic yeasts – immune response – hypersensitivity – atopic dermatitis.
