Šoffová S, Hrbáček J, Zachoval R. The incidence and the results of surgical management of local recurrence of renal malignancy
Objective: The aim of this study is to find out the occurrence and the results of surgical treatment for local recurrence of renal cell carcinoma.
Materials and methods: Our retrospective study includes all patients operated and followedup for local recurrence of renal cell carcinoma from January 2007 to March 2020. The diagnosis of local recurrence was based on CT scan at the follow-up. At the time of primary tumor surgery, the histological type, degree of differentiation, oncological stage, size and location of the tumor were analyzed. At the time of local recurrence surgery, the time since primary tumor surgery and histological findings were analyzed. During follow-up, the oncological condition of the patients was evaluated.
Results: During the period 908 patients underwent surgery for renal cell carcinoma. 421 patients were followed-up, of which 276 underwent nephrectomy (NE) and 145 partial nephrectomy (PNE). Suspicious local recurrences occurred in nine patients and recurrence was confirmed in histological findings in six of them. The primary surgery technique was NE in three patients and PNE in three of them. After extirpation of local recurrence, relapse occurred in one patient, the remaining five patients are in complete remission. The mean time of follow-up after extirpation of local recurrence was 30.2 months.
Conclusions: The study confirms that local recurrences of renal cell carcinoma are rare, and their surgical solution brings good results.
