Overview
Ophthalmoscopy is an examination of the posterior eye segment. It is a non-invasive and simple procedure that can be used to evaluate optical media and fundus. Probably the most common indication of fundoscopy in pediatrics is suspected neuroinfection prior to lumbar puncture to exclude intracranial hypertension. Knowing the pathogenesis of papilledema, this examination is associated with relatively low sensitivity and specificity.
The article provides an overview of available literature and the importance of ophthalmoscopy in acute pediatric care.
