Overview
The incomplete development of the central nervous system of a newborn is a predisposing factor of increased seizure susceptibility in this age category. Primarily premature newborns are a highly endangered group. Early diagnosis of neonatal seizures, and initiation of their adequate therapy, with regard to etiology, is crucial. Seizures, especially repetitive or status epilepticus, have a negative impact on the psychomotor development of the subject, and may lead to irreversible neurological damage. The prediction of prognosis in the individual patient is based mainly on the primary cause.
The past decade has shown a significant improvement in prognosis of the affected newborns. Despite the progress in diagnostics and therapy, the neonatal seizures are still linked to a high morbidity, and mortality.
