The present state in the newborn hearing screening and pre-school and school-age screening in the Slovak Republic

The study brings a present view on the neonatal and pre-school and school-age hearing problems in the Slovak Republic. It defines the principles to be observed at the organization and performance of screening from the point of view of the World Health Organization and based on the European Consensus Statement on Neonatal Hearing Screening (1998) and on the European Consensus Statement on Pre-School and School-Age Hearing Screening (2012).
Being professionally guided by the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic, in the year 2006 the Slovak Republic introduced a nationwide neonatal hearing screening, which is carried out in neonatal departments. In 2015 the national registry of children with impaired hearing came into existence where all the children with confirmed hearing problems should be registered, mainly by 6 ENT departments disposing of the equipment for reliable diagnostics of hearing problems in children. As for pre-school and school-age screening in child- ren, there exists only a guideline elaborated by the chief expert for otorhinolaryngology at the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic and approved by the Slovak Society for Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of the Slovak Medical Society. Due to a short history of the registry and insufficient collection of screening results or newly found children patients with impaired hearing the area-wide care for these patients reaches miscellanious levels, quality management of data is not possible to the fullest. At present the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic cooperates with professional companies on preparation of national diagnostic and therapeutic methods, which should guarantee an improvement of quality in patients with impaired hearing within the Slovak Republic. In future the registry should be run through automatic data transfer via net connection excl. the IT systems in hospitals and it should enable continuous monitoring in patients with impaired hearing until its definite solution.
