Overview
The author deals with the history of the care of patients with cystic fibrosis in Slovakia. Cystic fibrosis belongs to most frequent genetically cases diseases. The fate of the patients began to change radically with increasing knowledge of the disease. The improvement in quality of life and survival of the patients from the 80ies took place not only due to introduction of highly concentrated preparation of pancreatic enzymes, but especially due to understanding of CT as a chronic inflammatory disease with many genetically based deviations in the immune system.
The therapy of patients with this multi-organ disease is concentrated in specialized centers. Since 1995 the data of patients with CF in Slovakia have been collected in National Register of Cystic Fibrosis. Since 2007 the newborn screening started in Slovakia.
