Overview
Early obstructive respiratory disorders are a very frequently encountered problem in pediatric practice. Up to 30% children in preschool age experience at least one episode of bronchial obstruction. This may be associated with viral respiratory infections; however, it may be also a first episode of bronchial asthma. Appropriate and early diagnosis of early obstructive symptoms is therefore very important for introduction of long-term management plan.
Main component of proper diagnostics is a very thorough evaluation of medical history, assessment of risk factors and clinical presentation. Very important is also detailed differential diagnosis.
Early commencing of preventative anti-asthma treatment after confirmation of the diagnosis may significantly improve prognosis of asthma and prevent long-term irreversible sequelae in the bronchial wall.
