Overview

Comparing the two groups of girls in our study, those with synechia (n = 36) and those without (n = 17), authors found statistically significant factors involved in the development of synechia.Instruction of the mother on the proper care of her daughter’s genitalia (both in the maternity hospital and by the paediatrician), and decreasing the effect of chemical agents on the soft skin and mucosa by adding an extra rinsing cycle to the washing machine programme both prevent the incidence of synechia vulvae.Synechia are detected in the membranous stage, when they can be disrupted in the outpatient surgery. Nevertheless, this procedure and the healing of the epithelial defect are unpleasant and stressful experiences for the patient and her family, and can be prevented.

Key words:
paediatric gynaecology, synechia vulvae, prevention
