Overview

The objective of the work was to investigate and compare the appearance of root canal walls after treatment with the Er, Cr:YSGG laser and a diode laser. Fifteen extrated teeth divided at random into three groups were treated by endodontic methods using manual tools up to the ISO 30 size. The first group was subsequently exposed to Er, Cr:YSGG laser, the other group was exposed to diode laser and the samples of the third group was then treated manually by the balanced force method up to the ISO 40 size. The irrigation was made by 0.12% chlorhexidine solution.

After the treatment with the Er,Cr:YSGG laser the walls were predominantly deprived of the smear layer, the entries into the dentin tubules were opened. After the irradiation with the diode laser, a recrystallized smear layer became apparent which closed the entries into the dentine tubules. The manual preparation with irrigation by chlorhexidine resulted into more extensive areas of smear layer, especially in the apical area.

Key words:
laser – root canal preparation and treatment – smear layer
